What AFUE actually means
AFUE, Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, is the share of fuel a furnace turns into heat over a season. Standard-efficiency gas furnaces are commonly around 80% AFUE. High-efficiency condensing furnaces are commonly 90% AFUE or higher, and they vent differently and make condensate that must drain properly. A higher AFUE wastes less gas, but it does not fix a badly sized furnace or leaky ducts.
Why sizing matters more than brand
| Furnace size | What happens |
|---|---|
| Too big | Short-cycles, wears ignitors and motors, heats unevenly, wastes gas |
| Too small | Runs constantly in a cold snap and still cannot hold temperature |
| Right-sized | Longer, steadier cycles, even rooms, lower wear and bills |
How we size
We look at your home’s size, insulation, windows, and air leakage, and at Springfield’s winter lows, rather than copying the old unit’s size. Old units were often oversized to begin with, so copying them repeats the mistake. After installation, we check temperature rise and safety controls, and show you the new thermostat and filter.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does AFUE mean?
Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency: the share of fuel turned into heat over a heating season. An 80% AFUE furnace turns about 80% of its fuel into heat; a 90%+ unit wastes less, but sizing and ductwork matter just as much as the rating.
Is a bigger furnace better?
No. An oversized furnace short-cycles, wears parts out early, heats unevenly, and wastes gas. A correctly sized furnace runs longer, steadier cycles and keeps rooms even.
How is the right size calculated?
By a heat-load calculation for your home: size, insulation, windows, air leakage, and Springfield winter design temperatures, not just the old unit’s label. We run the numbers before recommending a size.
Should I choose 80% or 90%+ AFUE?
It depends on your home, gas costs, venting, and how long you plan to stay. We lay out both options with real prices, so the choice is math, not pressure.
