Start with the simple checks: thermostat set to Heat and above room temperature, furnace switch on, breaker not tripped, and filter not completely clogged. If the furnace clicks but never lights, the ignitor is the usual suspect. If it lights then shuts off, check the flame sensor story on our service page. If you smell gas, skip the checks, leave the house, and call your gas utility or 911. Everything else — gas valves, control boards, safety switches — is a tech job, and we diagnose it in order, cheapest to check first.
